What is TRE®?

Tension, Stress, and Trauma Release Exercises (or TRE®) is a simple and innovative somatic trauma therapy technique designed to assist the body in releasing deeply rooted muscular tension patterns associated with tension, stress, and trauma. The practice involves a series of exercises that facilitate the onset of involuntary neurogenic tremors as a vehicle for deep muscular tension release. TRE was developed by Dr. David Berceli and is practiced in over 30 countries.

TRE is facilitated in a safe and controlled environment allowing the nervous system to release tension patterns and return to a state of calm and balance. The benefits of TRE practice are wide-ranging, some of which include:

  • Reduced anxiety and stress
  • Improved resilience and ability to cope with life’s challenges
  • Reduced symptoms of PTSD
  • Reduced chronic pain
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved digestion
  • Reduced stress associated with terminal/chronic illnesses
  • Improved interpersonal relationships
  • Reduced muscle recovery time
  • Improved athletic performance

TRE is designed as both a therapy technique and a self-help tool. TRE as a self-help practice can be utilized to reduce stress and support physical performance while professionally facilitated TRE sessions are often utilized in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety disorders, and chronic pain.

Individuals with a significant history of trauma, anxiety disorders, depression, and mental illness are strongly encouraged to seek professional facilitation in a safe and controlled environment to reduce the risk of serious harm. TRE, although a subtle practice on the surface, must be approached with caution as it carries the potential for serious harm if not administered or practiced properly. As with all somatic therapy practices, LESS IS MORE with TRE.

The TRE practice is suitable for most individuals especially

  • Individuals with significant trauma history
  • Veterans, frontline workers, and emergency response teams
  • Individuals with anxiety and depressive disorders
  • Individuals with autoimmune conditions and/or chronic pain
  • Postpartum women
  • Individuals diagnosed with or recovering from a serious or terminal illness

Facilitated private TRE sessions are a critical component of Integrative Trauma Healing and are deeply woven into the somatic approaches I utilize in my private practice. Book a free consult with me today to learn more.
