What Is The Safe & Sound Protocol?
--
The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a cutting-edge innovative somatic therapy system designed as a vehicle for a non-invasive application of the Polyvagal Theory. The SSP was developed based on decades of research by Dr. Stephen Porges who is known for his introduction of the Polyvagal Theory in the 90s.
Multiple peer-reviewed research articles have demonstrated the efficacy of the SSP in supporting agency and control over emotions, improved hearing and listening, and better behavioral organization. While most of the SSP research has been focused on individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, various smaller-scale studies have demonstrated its efficacy in the treatment of PTSD, ADD, Sensory Hypersensitivities, and Chronic Pain.
Heightened sensory states are a hallmark of trauma. Many individuals with PTSD report heightened sensitivity to light, sounds, touch, taste, and smell, often requiring significant life modifications to avoid discomfort and overwhelm. The SSP offers a simple, accessible, and innovative opportunity to reduce sensory sensitivities and support individuals in reducing sensory disturbances.
The SSP involves three distinct pathways facilitated by trained professionals: SSP Connect, SSP Core, and SSP Balance, each designed to help the nervous system to improve agency over receiving, processing, and responding to the cues and signals from the world around us.
The SSP Connect is designed to warm up ad establish safety in the nervous system
The SSP Core is designed to wake up, exercise, and open the nervous system, to build capacity, achieve reduced sensitivity, and a more resilient physiological state.
The SSP Balance is designed as an integrative phase to continue to stabilize and maintain a sense of calm and grounding.
Each SSP Pathway involves 5 hours of listening to specially-filtered music that has been treated to train the neural networks of listening to prioritize focus on the various frequency ranges of the human voice.
SSP is not meant to be utilized as a stand-alone practice and is best suited as a…
